Protective big brother

Ryan, just 22 months old, didn't show much interest in his baby sister when she was born. He'd occasionally check her out but didn't give her nearly the attention that Brendan did.

In the past couple of weeks, he's become more aware of her and tries to engage her. He likes to tell me where the baby should go (in the car seat or crib), looks for her, and gives her a blanket.

I was a bit surprised to see his reaction at the swim club on Wednesday. There were only three families at the pool, and there was one other little boy who'll turn 2 this month. He had headed toward our chairs to examine our bag of toys. Then he noticed the stroller and went to see the baby.

Ryan, who was minding his own business in the pool, quickly darted out of the water and moved to the stroller. He gave the boy a stern lecture, complete with body language, telling him to stay away from his baby sister. Of course, this was all in baby talk peppered with a few recognizable words.

It was such a sweet moment to see him protect Kelsey. This gesture gives us insight into what he thinks of our newest addition, even though he doesn't have the words to communicate it to us now.
