Wilbur and friends

Yesterday Brendan and I finished Charlotte's Web, which we borrowed from the library about a week ago. I had been eager to begin reading longer books to him, as he can now sit through a longer story and doesn't need pictures to keep his interest. I was also curious to see how well he could listen. I wasn't sure whether he'd enjoy it, though.

In the end, I was impressed with his ability to follow the story and pick it up the next day. There were times I didn't think he was listening, but he'd chime in with a comment or even finish a sentence for me. The few pages with drawings he'd study very closely as I read. All in all, I think he enjoyed it, though I don't think he'd like to read several chapter books day after day.

So for now, I'll hold off before reading Stuart Little. No doubt he'll want to return to reading his Disney Treasures book, which is challenging enough!

(P.S. -- Charlotte's Web beats the Spider-Man books that he begged me to get from the library. It's so unfortunate that there aren't more preschooler- or grade-schooler friendly superhero stories. They are definitely geared for a more mature audience.)

Cooper loves chapter books. Some suggestions, based on what he's liked:
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator (though the political commentary definitely went over his head)
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Harry Potter (we're up to the fourth book, which is really too dark for a newly 6-year-old)
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Mr. Popper's Penguins
